Question by Hyoroemon: What are the criteria of a disc to be called a blu ray disc?
I just wondering about these blu/blue ray things.

1.What are the criteria of a disc to be called a blu ray disc?
2.Does having blue color on its back side( side with no picture) making its a blue ray?
And last question, does the original blu ray has difference from original DVD/CD? Like graphic or something else?

Blu Ray disk is an optical storage system, a blu ray disk uses blue laser to store information(hence the name) which allows it to store more information (by increasing the density of info) as compared to a dvd which uses a red laser.

Do blu ray players generally take a long time to load up a disc?

Question by Stevie T: Do blu ray players generally take a long time to load up a disc?
Am new to the blu ray thing and have not used a machine before. Does anyone know the average time it takes to load a disc on a blu ray machine in relation to a DVD?

Just worried incase my machine is sick or this is the general time it takes to load anything!

Sometimes it seems to take forever. It is not just you or your player. I was sure that my Blu Ray player had crapped out when I loaded Avatar in the tray the first time, but it played … eventually. I didn’t time it, but it must have taken at least 45 seconds.

I don’t think just because Blu Ray has a higher compression rate and can fit a lot more information on it makes it a different format. Isn’t it just an improved DVD? Isn’t this whole Blu ray thing a marketing scheme? And the fact that it requires a different kind of player doesn’t mean it is a different format. When Hybrid cars that ran on battery power came out we didn’t stop calling them cars, did we?

So how can Blu Ray be a different format than DVD?

Ok.

Blu-ray uses a blue (violet) laser with a shorter wavelength than a DVD which uses a red laser (405 nm vs 650 nm) meaning a Blu-ray can hold much more data than a dvd (50gb dual layer vs 9gb dual layer)

Its just a name anyway. DVD actually stands for both digital video disc and digital versatile disc. blu-ray shortens to BD

also there was HD-DVD which just stood for high definition
(too many D’s in my opinion)

and according to your argument we should be calling them cds (since cds were first)

or even further back than that (im not too sure what was before that)

I am trying to update my blu ray player’s firmware. And it says to use a CD-R. But the Blu Ray player basically rejects it and I can’t update the firmware. Please Help!

If it needs a disc it has to be Blu-ray.However you should be able to do it on line.

Where can I get a Blu-ray disc without a digital copy?

Question by Hyper: Where can I get a Blu-ray disc without a digital copy?
Does anyone have any idea where I can purchase Blu-ray copies of DVD’s without being forced to buy the pointless digital copies that so often come with them? I don’t want these extra discs as I have no use whatsoever for them (I do have portable media devices but I rarely tend to use them for movies) and I resent paying an extra £5 or so for an item I’ll never use. I want the Blu-ray disc alone. Any ideas?

If I were you, I’d just buy them from Amazon which tends to have the best prices. However, you still have to get the digital copy. Your only option might be Ebay but you’re just as likely to get scammed big time on Ebay. You’re not really paying the £5 just for the digital copy. You’re paying it for the Blu-Ray HD version of the movie and all the extra features that come with it. The disks themselves barely cost anything to manufacture; you’re primarily paying royalties on the movies and patents for the Blu-Ray technology.

I have just aquired a large screen tv and I will watch lots of movies on it but should I purchase a blu ray disc player or should I continue with my dvd player? I don’t want to replace my library of dvds.

I can barely see the difference. It’s a better quality movie. I guess if you want to spend the 0 for the player it would be worth it. FYI, I blue ray player will also play your DVD Movies.

If you downloaded a blu-ray bittorrent file, how do you convert it so that it can be burnt onto a BD-R with a blu-ray burner?

If it’s a Blu-ray file you just burn it. If it’s a different file type, you need a conversion program from that type to the type you need. Which one depends on what the file type is. (I assume that you’ve gotten the video file out of the rar or zip.)
